This is a small project I did specifically to use up some scrap wood and to use this drop of white oak from a countertop we made at my job a while back. It got cut off because it had the pith running through the middle of it, which is exactly why I wanted it. The face of the board perfectly bisects the rings of the tree and the whole piece has beautiful “quartersawn” rays. It probably didn’t need the bow ties, but I went ahead and put them for the practice and because I like how it looks.
This originally just started out to be a quick project, but the more I worked the wood by hand, the less I wanted to use power tools. It’s gotten to be a hassle to get everything set up and deal with the dust and the noise.
So this project was probably done 90% with hand tools.
I also got some practice in at different joinery. So much so, that I decided I didn’t need glue. When I put it together since it’s a small project and it will just hold a box for me to empty my pockets in at the end of the day.
The battens underneath are sliding dovetails, it’s got wedged tenons, tusked tenons, and draw-bored tenons.
Lots of fun, good practice, and a great use of “scrap” wood!

Sweet little table … I really like the top … especially the butterflies! Good job!

Love it. Great use of wood with real visual appeal. Lends some real character to the project.
