Hi to all you LumberJocks, Well progress is being made. Melinda and I took some time off as we had some nice days. Took a little road trip but we are back. Thought you might like to see some update pictures.
Pic.#1 Kayak is still upside down but all the stringers are attached and the boots are attached to the bow and stern pieces. They are there to soften the edges and cover the attachment points.
Pic.#2 The stringers were to be screwed onto the frames with 2 screws. but since a kayak is supposed to be able to flex I chose to only use one and then lash the stringers to the frames. The dowels serve 2 purposes, one to hold the screw, we all know how well screws hold to edge grain plywood, don’t we, and they also make lashing a lot easier. I bought the lashing material at Tandy Leather, it is called seinew, waxed nylon thread. The stuff is quite tough and since I couldn’t find any seal guts to make it from this will just have to do.
Pic.#3 The polyester fabric skin is attached, primed and painted in this pic. I will be attaching the deck fabric some time this week. It is raining and might snow some tonight or tomorrow so this will be a good time to stay indoors. Thats all for now folks, take care… Robert

Thanks for the progress report. It looks like it will be a nice kayak. Is this your first build of this type? Using plans, books, personal experience? What kind of wood are you using for the stringers?

Looks like a smooth ride! I would love to try a canoe someday but it’s way down the priority list. Thanks for the post, BTKS

Looks nice

Is the skin done or does it get a risin or coating of some kind?

A beautiful object. It’s amazing how the natural lines of boats follow perfect curves.
You’re having snow in Nevada? Do you have to import it or is it available at the local Walmart?
Gerard
did you follow plans?
