I made this accessory box for my wife by slicing 1/4 inch strips from a piece of Poplar and then gluing them together, edge to edge. I lined the inside with felt, tucking the edges into a groove for neatness. A lot of people do not like poplar, but I do not know why. Seems nice to me. I finished the box with oil, except the bottom which I painted black with acrylic paint. Some of the black paint got into the oil, giving it an aged effect. A lucky coincidence.

Nice box. I like the banding around the bottom.

Very nice. I bet she really liked it. I too use a lot of poplar. Some is just plain but sometimes you can find some with some really beautiful grain patterns. Like this!

It is amazing all the colors that can be found in poplar. A lot of it has a greenish cast, but I have seen pieces as white as maple and as black as ebony.

Have your say...
