I picked up an old Craftsman 113.238000 lathe from Botietruck a couple of days ago (thanks Bob).
First I made a round peg from a square one…everything went well, so I was trying to figure out what to REALLY make so I chucked up the round peg and remembered the last lathe project I worked on, in 1968!!!.
It was a piece of mesquite from my back yard and it broke irrepairably about 5 minutes before I finished sanding it on the latch.
So, 42 years later, here’s a do-over, this time in lyptus.

It is a functional item although I don’t think the originals had a stand.
.....
Quick update while I can,

Can you believe it, Botietruck guessed it….same jock that sold me the lathe I made it on.

One more update….
Lyptus (like I said), Light brown Briwax applied while turning.

I can at least tell you that your do-over turned out nice. I don’t have a clue as to what it is, and not too sure I want to take a guess! It almost looks like something that would be used in the kitchen for baking. Nice turning.

I asked my wife what she thought it was. She said “baby rattle” – we’ll go with that… Looks real nice!

WOW Pete, That is nice! Is that a sock darning egg? Looks like what my grandmother had years ago.

Hey Bob, ya got it!!!!
First you sell me the lathe.
Then you guess what my first project is!
I broke the one years ago because I made the handle a LOT smaller in diameter, and in retrospect I think I had way too much pressure on the tailstock…I learned my lesson this time.
I ended up putting the lathe back on the stand you gave me….gotta get some BIG casters for it.
I redid the power setup and put a heavy 15 foot power cord on it. Saves wiggling it over to an outlet or running an extension cord.
And I don’t think the cover over the headstock is the original, was looking at it when I took the cover off to redo the switch, I think a previous owner rigged that cover up.
Thanks again.
