I built a small shelf for my son out of some old Bradford Pear. The wood has a little history: ten years ago when my son was 16 he did a lot of wood turning and collected wood where ever he could. Apparently he found some Pear wood somewhere and, as luck would have, totaled our minivan on the way home from work when he hit some ice and took out a brick mailbox and planter…scattering the Bradford Pear all over somebody’s front yard. I found the wood this weekend in our shed and built a little shelf for his bathroom out of his long lost wood

I told him I was cleaning the shed out and was sending that old wood back to him

It’s a very creative rustic piece.

Pretty cool shelf! I love pear wood. He was lucky to have found some nice boards of pear. Not so lucky after that, apparently.

Great work and great use for that wood. Bradford pears are generally reviled. My dad recently had to take 2 of them down from his yard and I salvaged some. We’ve mostly been using it as firewood but I’ve taken a few select pieces for small projects like knife scales. I think it would be great for turning. It can have some beautiful figure.
