I made this box for my sons confirmation gift. It’s quarter-sawn makore, quarter-sawn sycamore and a little maple. Specifically the top underside is maple. I was afraid the sycamore wouldn’t display the scripture. My wife and I chose the scripture because he’s a young man and he’s growing up. We want him to know even when he’s away from us, his savior will always be there. The engraving was done on a friends cnc.
The bottom has been wrapped in leather with a false bottom so it’s a clean look underneath. The dovetails are not handcut, rather my Leigh dovetail machine.
I was out to make him something he’d cherish to mark the occasion.

wow how did you get a thin layer of (maple?) inbetween the tails and pins? (is the layer part of the tails or the pins?)

You are correct it is maple. The contrasting pieces are cut and glued together like normal. The maple was slightly thicker, say 5/8 maple, 1/2” makore. The the maple side is then cut away making the board whole again. Adjust the jig accordingly and recut the tails a second time. It’s a process but using the jig is cheating (don’t tell Ron).
Thanks for the compliments everyone.

Very nice! Your Leigh dovetail machine did an excellent job on those dovetails … cheater!

I love it. I made one for my sister’s wedding gift from some scrap solid surface I had laying around.

Oh that’s unnecessary… Very kind but thanks for the thought. Sawduztjunky that box is cool, especially for a wedding gift. Hope your cut finger is ok.

Thanks. And my thumb is sore for now. I will need some bone grafting to replace some of my missing bone, but it’ll be ok

Cool box! Love what you did with the dovetails. And really love the scripture. I wish I had access to cnc.
