This candleholder is made from a barnboard salvaged from my Great-grandfather’s barn prior to it being demolished. Rick and I did the woodworking and then I engraved on the back raw-edge “Roswell Heritage”. (Roswell being my family name). Now, both sides of the candleholder are unique.
It now sits in a place of honour in our living room.

Simple, yet delightful. The old barn that was on the three acres where I spent many of my boyhood years is gone forever. How I wish I had something like this as a reminder. Very nice Debbie!

thank you Dennis & Don. It is indeed very special. I also made one for my older brother and I think I’ll make one for each of my children, out of the rest of the board.
I also got a beautiful engraved hinge (just 1) and it’s waiting for me to decide what treasure it will be attached to. I’ve never seen anything like it before.

That’s really neat to have something like that and nice that you made more for other family members. You should put a pic up of the hinge. Would be neat to see.

Thank you Shawn. I trying to find a way to make the end cuts “grey”, so they match the look of the rest of the wood. I also want to make a larger one, so that it doesn’t disappear on the big table that this one is currently sitting on. But, just as it is, it is a wonderful addition to our home and to our family heritage.

Debbie, just thinking about your woodworking treasures that you give to family members. Virtually all of my work goes to friends and family, so some time ago I ordered one of these from Lee Valley. It’s a way of giving with a personal reminder about the giver. And who knows – maybe some day one of these pieces will become an heirloom.

yah. It’s not “just” a candleholder—it is my ancestry. It is “who I am”. And hopefully it will be passed along through generations.
Perhaps I should make a storage box for it, for when it is not sitting out on the table… then I could record its history!

Debbie, I just finished looking at all of your things. Very nice and very creative. I especially love this. Maybe I can do the same with my friends wood she gave me and give one of these to her. Thanks for the story.

MsDebbie,
Isn’t it amazing how wood can be a continuing history. A tree, to a barn, to a candle. The wood and the story transcends time.
The candle’s simple elegance says it all- beautiful!
