This is my carving of a female form. It’s done in pine, and finished with 2 coats of black ultra penetrating wood stain, and several layers of a spray on clear coat in satin sheen.
As part of my quest to grow and expand my carving abilities, I thought the difficulties of carving a human form (of getting the proportions of the body right) would be a good challenge for me. More specifically trying to capture the beauty of the female curves. I attempted a female form in 2 of my carvings from my 1st post here on LJ’s (the mermaid, and the other one that I call “Exposed”), but I wasn’t completely happy with those. My other carvings have had alot of detail in them, so I wanted to keep this one simple…give the background texture, but make it dark so that it contrasts with the light color of the natural pine, and really stay focused on the contours of the body.
Some of the depth is lost in the photos, I think it looks alot more flat then what it really looks like in person…but that’s okay.
Any ideas as to what to call this one would be appreciated. I’m kind of drawing a blank. All comments positive or negative are welcome, and thanks for looking : )

that´s not bad at all you deffently have talent for it
why don´t just call it first time nude
not becourse of the nude looking figur but more like
you have stand in front of the the wood and felted
totely blank before you started the journey with the materiel

“Missing you”
To me the background is rain
and the female body is lonely by the way she is standing
shes missing someone!

Beautiful work, I really like how the grain on the pine gives character to the piece. I would call this piece: “Ala Natural” or “Nature’s Finest”

Good work, nice use of the grain/ figuring of the wood and a very natural form. I like the background contrast as well. As for a name how about ‘Heliades’ the daughter of the sun-god Helios who changed into trees.

Very good carving. Did you work from a photo or just visualized what you wanted? As for a title, maybe “A Voyeur’s View”. I’m not too good with coming up with titles. God luck though.

My first thought was “NOT JUST ANY WHITE ASH”, but then seen it was pine.
How about “Embodied” ??
Great piece of artwork. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comments, and suggestions on what to call it : )
Roper- I do all of my carvings by hand, although I would love to give power carving a try some time.
BreakingBoardom- I wish I could say this was a “self portrait”...HA,ha! ; ) , or that I can just pull an image like that right out of my brain and go to work like some people can…but sadly no. I used a picture for inspiration that I found online.
I have to say, it was somewhat difficult serching for a naked picture that: #1- doesn’t show a face, because I wanted to concentrate on the curves of the body and not facial detail, and …. #2- something that people wouldn’t call “pornographic” or “inappropriate”...because I know how touchy SOME people can be when it comes to the naked body. I wanted the interpretation to be left up to the viewer as to it’s sexual nature, so I thought a simple naked back-side worked best, and still let me concentrait on the curves and proportion like I wanted. Sadly, I’m sure someone will still cry about it.
”Lucky Dawg”- I really like your enterpretation of it….I felt like the subject would have a feeling an emptyness or sadness as I was carving it. Keep the ideas coming, and I’ll post later on to let anyone who’s interested know what name I chose.
