Project Information

I made this name plate for my first child Joanna, who was born last week.

The letters are milled out of 1/8" purpleheart on a CNC milling machine, and are attached to the curly maple base with ebonized birch dowels. I cut a thin piece of MDF into the shape of the base using the CNC milling machine, and then I used that template along with a templating router bit to shape the curly maple base. The finished name plate measures ~ 3" x 1.75" x 11.5".

The maple portion is finished with 5 or 6 coats of dewaxed shellac and a coat of paste wax, and the purpleheart is finished with a few coats of dewaxed shellac plus two coats of spar urethane to hopefully hold in the color for a little longer.
