Arctic Seal

Yesterday, was such a beautiful warm Spring day that I took a break from my 2.5 year long house renovation to sit in the sun and just relax and do nothing. As is my nature, doing nothing is a hard ‘row to hoe’. I saw a small chunk of birch lying nearby (from cutting the tree down last month) and since I had just sharpened my carving knife the day before, though I would give it a quick test for sharpness. 2-1/2 hours later I was finished with my ‘rest in the sun’.... LOL …. The knife proved itself quite sharp, now I need to put another good edge on it.

This piece… an abstracted Arctic Seal is the first piece I’ve carved in about 11 months. It measures 16.5cm x 11.5cm x 11cm tall. The house will be completed towards the end of the summer and I’ll be able to focus once again on my art. Hope you all enjoy this small tidbit!

Hi Rick, this nice project encourage me to look on your previous projects. I enjoyed to see your unique projects. I suggest you not to wait for an excuse to carve something but to find time to carve (between renovation the house) for your fun and for our – lumberjocs members’ enjoyment

Thanks Eli, for your favorable comment. As much as I would love to just jump into the wood chips immediately, I gave myself a firm commitment about three years ago to spend ALL of my creative efforts on the house which then will give me a great studio from whence to work from. Now that it’s been 2-1/2 years on the house, I’m finally on the ‘home’stretch and will be finished around September/October. Then I can focus 100%.... er rather most all of my time (outside, gardening and just living life) on these creative pursuits.

One plus is that in the final stages, the house requires some ‘extra’ creative details, like border and accent tiles… which I have already begun designing and will soon start producing. That’s for my fun, great investment for the house and possible future sales of items, as well!

I’ll try to do a few smaller works now and then until I’m full time, just to keep your appetite stimulated…. LOL
