These are my first turnings. I made the gavel for my wife who is currently in law school and the other thingymabob is a candle holder that i made from some scrap poplar, i was mainly just trying to figure out how to use my lathe and tools. The gavel is made from mahogany and maple.

Gavel looks really cool. Nice present for a law student. Things like the candle holder are a very good way to practice. Gives you a good feel for the tools. Watch videos, and practice, practice, practice.

Both pieces are very nice turnings.

Keep it up.

Greetings Randy: It’s been awhile since I’ve heard anything out of you. You been in hiding? Stellar job on the gavel and thingymabob, or candle holder, as you called it. Really nice, and I’ll bet your wife will be proud of the gavel. too. I’m not a turner, and know nothing about it, but I do know good woodworking when I see it, and I know this is good work. Keep on keeping on with the turning, and again, stellar job…... later, dude.

Thanks for the comments. Rick, ive been staying fairly busy and havnt spent much time on LJ’s lately. The lathe has been a distraction from other projects. The spare time i have had has been spent mostly piddeling on the lathe. Im lovin it but i really need to jump back on some other projects.

Awesome job on the gavel. I made a wooden mallet last week. It was roughly made just for practice. I love yours.

Wow, if these are your first turnings, especially the gavel, you are destined to be one of the premier woodturners. Really nice pieces – both of them.
