This is a colonial style mantel that I built out of poplar for my wife this holiday season as a gift. The original mantel was a simple pine board that did not match after I tiled the fireplace. This was my first time using crown molding which was a pain until I made a jig for the table saw to cut it at the right angles. The top is 6/4 poplar and the rest is 4/4 and out of the deal I was able to purchase a new router to add the edge to the mantle top. As a final touch on the backside of the mantel I mortised a spot and mounted a 2006 dated penny.

Mark, welcome to LumberJocks. Good to see you putting up your first project only a few minutes after you joined us.
That’s one of the great things about doing home projects, you can justify spending some money on tools.
Nice work.

Beautiful Mark,
I bet when people enter the room they can’t keep their eyes away from it.
Welcome aboard Lumberjocks.

Thanks Don and Dick for the welcome and comments, it is nice to be able to share my creations with other woodworkers.
I have received a few compliments on it so far, in fact my neighbor fell in love with it and wants me to build her a mantel for her fireplace.
Thanks for the encouraging words and I am looking forward to completing and posting more projects in the future.
