We live in Ohio. I asked my daughter if she wanted to make a project together for her bedroom. She said she wanted something Ohio, like with an American flag on it. So I start thinking and come up with the following design.
I go to the big orange store and get a 1×6 poplar board. I use Mattias Wandel's Big Print program (OK, the eval version, but I really like how it performed for this 1st project and I should buy it) to print a big template of Ohio. I laid the print out on the 1×6 and cut the paper into strips and taped it to the board. I cut the board into lengths and reassembled into the shape of Ohio. I cut it out on the band saw and pocket hole screwed it together.
I taped off for the white and red stripes, and we gave it 2 coats of red, white, and blue. I printed a star field from a USA flag and cut out the stars with an X-acto knife so we could dab the white paint through the template. It’s hung on the wall with a saw tooth hanger.
We obviously couldn’t get all 50 stars in the corner, but it’s not meant to be an exact replica flag. Ohio is pretty square, so at least all 13 stripes are present, even if just a little bit. Here’s another finished picture of it hanging in her room:
