Making stuff from junk

Since I don’t have any big projects going on, and I obviously have too much time on my hands (see my recent post “cheaper sawstop research” in the “Safety in woodworking shop” forum, I got “putzy” and decided to use up some cedar closet liner 1/4” boards from a yard sale and an old stripped silverware box I bought at a different yard sale for a buck.
I recently found a set of original and never used or even honed Shopsmith lathe chisels that date to the era of my machines. (early 1950’s), and I thought they might look good in a presentation case of sorts, and this box was just the right size.
I refinished the box and cut the cedar to line the lower part and extended it a bit to make a humidor type fit when closed.
I used cedar and pine scraps to make a mounting frame for an extra Shopsmith headstock badge I had laying around and added it to the lid. A little scrap felt on the bottom finishes the project.
The only problem, here, is that my wife asked if I was ever going to actually use the chisels, and I said “no”, to which she replied, “Great, then you can put this up on ebay to help fund your hobby.”

Very nice. The logo really adds to it.

But I think I’m starting to side with your wife. I’m a tool junkie, and a packrat. I know in my shop I’m getting up to my ears in “cool stuff”. Sooner or later I need to clean some of it up and pass it on to someone who will actually use it. Pass it on or sell it. And in this case you’ve made something nice, seems like you could get a reasonable price for it.

And then you could go out and buy another tool !!

Very cool!

I know the feeling – you see a tool sale or a yard sale that has tools and it’s like you’re a bug attracted to light. I don’t know how many unopened boxes of cool tools that I have in the shop.

But, when Christmas morning comes, I just go out to the shop and start opening the boxes. Ha ha ha!

That is a very nice display piece. My old Shopsmith still gets used for the drill press and the disc sander. And once in a while as the lathe. Those lathe tools will add to the machine when your grand kids start to use it. Good stuff

A man after after my own heart with fancier-than-necessary tool storage. Nice work!

E-bay? As k your wife if she would put one of her children up for sale on ebay!

Brilliant! Good use of “stuff” around the shop.

Great job! I really like the presentation box. What an excellent way to display your chisels.

Using eBay to fund your hobby is a pretty good idea. I had a “windfall” from my American Express card that funded my entire turning set up. After 3 years of laundering expense account money on my golf AMEX, I redeemed points for a new set of golf clubs. I promptly sold the clubs on eBay for too much money and bought a new Rikon midi lathe, a new Ryobi variable speed drill press, a set of turning chisels, 10 pen kits, a grab bag of 40 blanks, bits, collets, bushings, etc to begin turning. Go eBay!
