Nameplate Stand

A co-worker came to my boss a couple of weeks ago and asked for some ideas on what she could do with a couple of buffalo head medallions. He suggested maybe they would look good on a nameplate stand. He gave them to me and asked if I would design a stand incorporating the medallions somehow. I have never made one before and wanted to come up with a Native American feel to the stand, but wanted to make the medallions more of the focal point. I didn’t want it to be just a name stand, but more of a decorative element as well that tied in with her office decor. Her office is decorated with Native American effects, many of which she made herself.

The base is Oregon Walnut with the end pieces being Padauk with some spalted sapwood. The horizontal piece is Padauk and Maple and is attached with dowels.

Come to find out after my boss gave it to her, she was very excited about how it turned out and I received a very nice “Thank You” card from her. She likes it so much; she is looking at ordering a few more stands from me in the future. This was a lot of fun to make and given how well it was received, I look forward to making more. As always, your comments/suggestions are appreciated and thanks for taking the time to look.

I like the design and how you used contrasting woods to accentuate the mitered pieces. Overall this has a nice western theme to it but also a little Deco too.
Great work, and good for you that it is paying off.

Wow, this made me think of how many offices I’ve been in and completely overlooked the nameplate stand. This is a piece of artwork, and a focus point for anyone looking at a desk. Very very nice!

I guess you’re right Andy, it does have a bit of that Deco flavor.

Barbs- Thank you. I was trying hard to give it more of a decorative feel instead of just a nameplate. I didn’t want it plain jane, but I tried to keep it simple too.

Good work and nice result Brad. Unusual projects require creativity which I think you did very well with on this one.

Thanks Stefang and Doug!

Doug-I would say making a desk would be a great addition to your “to do” list. If you do, let me know. (:
