Wife wanted to mount TV over the fireplace and needed more storage, hence bookcases. The columns on the bottom have hidden storage for 100+ dvds and the horizontal piece under the mantel conceals all of the components (speaker system, DVD player, etc). M

Ingenious use of hidden storage. What type of hinge and closure mechanism did you use for the hidden compartments?

Used European style hinges. Adjustable lid supports from Rockler to hold the hidden compartment open. Free-handed the curved tops with a jig saw and sander.
