Those of you that have kids and/or grandkids that play Call of Duty will know what a Mystery Box is.
I have no idea. I just know my 14 year old grandson asked me to help him build one. We also made it serve double duty( no pun intended!) as a storage box for his “precious” collectible shoes. He has a place for 4 shoe boxes in the drawer as well as 4 in the top. It was fun and easy to build because we didn’t need to care much about a perfect finish. It was a great way to start the grandson out on all the tools and techniques needed to building this. Used the cheapest pine boards we could find. This was our first attempt at a torched finish. Will use a larger torch next time! The grandson made his own stencil for the question mark painting.

That’s a wonderful storage chest that will last him forever. Actually I have always called a box like this a foot locker. It’s a very nice piece and I’m sure that he loves it. Well done!

Very cool box. Question regarding the finish: was the dappling due mostly to dwelling longer in certain places with the torch, versus variations in the wood itself? I know that pine that has not been conditioned takes stain quite unevenly. Just curious, I’ve never tried burning wood like this to finish it.
