Boxes with drawers.....

Here are a couple of designs that I have been thinking about for some time. They are quite different than most jewellery boxes so it is a different look. Both have a couple of drawers as a feature and are mounted on a simple Asian inspired base that elevates the box and allows the drawers to be freely opened.
The first box features Quilted Maple veneer on 9mm marine ply and the ends and base are made from New Guinea Rosewood. On this box the drawers pull out from each end which allows the quilted maple centre piece to be left as a large feature. The corner joints are all lock mitre and this makes it a very simple build that pulls up perfectly square when glued up.The trays are lined with a deep red pigskin suede.
The second box is different as the drawer covers slide out revealing a full length tray. This will allow a secondary removeable half depth/half length tray be located in the main body. The construction of this box uses solid Fijian hardwood for the main body and the end pieces are made from Eucalyptus burl. This box will be lined with a purple suede.
They measure approx 450mm long x 160mm wide v 85 mm deep and the Asian plinth raises the box another 80 mm.
I actually drew a few of these designs in Sketch Up before proceeding and that helped getting the proportions as I wanted.

I like that ’’Japaneese’’ design. Beautiful leggs set too. Also the way drawers are hidden when closed.
