I took some scrap plywood and rare earth magnets to make a magnetic tray for drill bits storage. The tray was 11 inches deep to fit in my cabinet. Quick tip, always use twice as many magnets as you think you need.

Good tip and idea for magnets, but why you realy need magnets?

So, I think you are saying the magnets keep the bits from leaping out of the tray pockets.
