Hobby Greenhouse

this past summer I built a hobby greenhouse based off a plan listed in Mother Earth News, a magazine we subscribe to that covers a lot of gardening and homesteading ideas. We do a lot of gardening in raised beds and wanted a way to extend our growing season through the fall and winter. I modified the basic plan to make it larger (8×12 instead of 8×10) and changed the glazing to double wall polycarbonate to help with maintaining temperature and added metal roofing for longevity. This winter we were able to reap the benefits of fresh Broccoli,Swiss chard, lettuce and a safe place to store our Meyers lemon tree out of the cold. I am installing a thermostatically controlled solar attic vent this weekend to help control the temperature as we head into spring and summer. We learned a lot this year and plan to,start all of our seedlings in preparation for spring planting.

Very nice, I am planning a greenhouse out of old windows in the near future myself. You can probabaly grow all year in NC with a greenhouse and the right cold weather veggies??

That’s our plan JimmyS, we grow much of what we eat and can a lot of it during the normal growing season but nothing beats fresh veggies in the winter! I still need to add the solar powered vent so that it doesn’t get too hot in there. I should have that done in the next couple of weeks.

That’s no greenhouse, what you have there is a solar lumber kiln!

Whatever you use it for, I’m sure it will be quite handy. You’ll never regret extending the size two feet.

Nice job.
