Viking Shield

A lady contacted me and asked for a Viking shield for her 13 year old son. I had no idea where to start, but luck grabbed hold for once. Finally had a reason to use some rawhide I had cured a few years ago.

Don’t tell anyone, but the authenticity of the shield went out the window when I joined the 1/2” ash with dominos. The difficult part was dishing the shield boss. I split quite a few while trying to perfect the boss.
Favorite part of the build was utilizing tractor implement hardware and old horse saddle hardware (that I found in the dirt when I took down a barn) to make up the shoulder strap.
Ash wood
Metal strapping
Copper rivets
Vegetable tanned wrapped leather handle and shoulder strap.
Deer rawhide edge

Too cool buddy. That must have been one fun project to design and work out. One of those you only get to do when someone else needs it. I know there’s a 13 year-old somewhere that’s gonna be tickled pink!

This old Viking love it.
Domino was that not a Viking thing?
Fine build, fine shield.
Best thoughts,
