I am in the process of building a dining room table that is shorter than the bar height one we bought at sams club years ago. My dining room isn’t really big and the space below the window looked like it would be perfect to build in a bench and double as storage for water, paper towels, plates, etc.. It is about 8 foot wide and I used piano hinges for the 2 sections that lift up to gain access to the storage area inside. I have kids so I was a little worried that they may close the lids on their fingers so I bought some lift supports and soft close dampers so that it would support them while open and they wont slam when closed. The frame is made from 2×4’s and the front is beadboard, while the top is 3/4” plywood with a 3/8” strip of oak on the front edge. I painted it all white and we bought 2 outdoor cushions on clearance for $7.50 a piece. We stained the concrete floor a while before this project so it keeps the water cool also.
