In my paying job, I manage 140 people. One of the benefits of my woodworking is that I can make things for my people that they otherwise might not be able to afford. Recently, I had the opportunity to build 3 toy boxes for one of my employees. She has 2 daughters and a newborn son. This first box made entirely from 2×4s, was made for her son. I cut it all to length, jointed and planed it and made panels. It was a ton of work, but I am pleased with the final results. I finished it with amber shellac.

On another note: I really like working with spruce framing lumber like this. It’s of a hardness and texture that really works well and it’s not expensive. I’ve had the opportunity to make some pieces of furniture out of it. You don’t have to worry about mistakes as it’s not an expensive mistake and you can throw out that piece of wood. It sands well and is fairly light to handle compared to some other woods. And, like your chests it produces some surprisingly good looking products from it. Nice job and I like your cause.

I usually purchase wider pieces, 10” for example. and split them into narrower 6” sizes that fit in my jointer. The reason is that by doing this you get flatter, non twisted wood this way. Just sayin’.
