Treasure Box

One of my grandsons has been spending one day a week with me. I decided that we needed a shop project to work on together during that time. I explained that we make a bird house, tool tote or a 6 board chest and drew a picture of each proposal to help him decide. Somehow he heard “Treasure Box” instead of 6 board chest and immediately choose it for us to make. When asked, he told me he plans on keeping his gold in it.

He likes being in the shop with me, might be the M&M’s that I keep in my tool box. He helped plane some, drilled holes for the cleats, designed the leg profile, designed the lid detail and applied the finish with me. We had a great time.

It’s made out of poplar and finished with milk paint, 2 coats of pumpkin over 1 coat of buttermilk, and a coat of Watco Danish oil. I’ve tried repeatedly to get those last two pictures to rotate properly but finally gave up, sorry.

Looks like he’s going to be a mighty fine little helper!

I like his outlook- filled with gold!

Nice project, Kenn

An excellent project—let alone a first project!

This is a beautiful box and you’ve done an outstanding job on it.

How wonderful!
What a lucky boy and what a lucky you.
Tell him he did a great job!.
Good plan to fill it with gold.
No need to rotate pictures, we are all just on the table now, sideways watching the photos…
Best thoughts,

Thanks for the comments. I really enjoyed doing this with him. I delivered it to his home yesterday and he told me that they have moved it into his room. Unfortunately the gold supply must be low because he says it is holding his stuffed animals. Little kids can be hilarious.

Kenn, the “treasure” has nothing to do with a wooden box. It’s the time spent together, just the boys, working together. Well done, sir!
