A farmer in Connecticut asked me to recreate an old, completely worthless horse drawn snow sleigh. After much thought after looking at the original I said sure.
In the pictures the original is in red and very much destroyed.
The other pictures show the progress of recreating what he once had. The only screws in this project were used to hold down the bench slats to the horizontal slats of the sleds, everything else was mortise and tendon. Even with that I created bungs that were pounded down on top of the wood screws and then flush sawed to the surface. All joining pieces were pre drilled from side to side and then I inserted oak wooden pegs through each joint completely glued in place.
The farmer chose white oak and after it was rough sawn it needed to cure 14 months before I could begin.
Although this was a great deal of work it was extremely rewarding kinda like going back in time. This has taken me over 3 years to get to this point and it is now ready for delivery. I am retired and happy and my work is a donation to his farm. He plans on giving horse drawn snow rides for any takers. It will be fun to watch.
I have many more pictures than 6 that I would have loved to post but here are the major steps.
