A First Bowl

I was given a very old Central Machinery lathe recently, and this is my first attempt at making a bowl. It’s a simple and light design, and I’m quite happy with it as a first go. I didn’t have any plan going into it, and just designed it freehand. It’s curly spalted maple that I milled myself, and the finish is just linseed oil.

I don’t have a chuck so it was turned entirely on a face plate and a jam-chuck, and I don’t have a bowl gouge so I made one out of a scrap of drill rod. I will eventually invest in nicer tools, but I was eager to get turning so I used what I had on hand.

That is excellent work for your first time around…..

Nice work for a first. You improvised nicely and are already caught up in the addiction. Keep them coming.

Nice work. You’re on the way. Turning can really draw you in. First thing you know, you have a how rack full of turning tools.

Very nice. Looks clean. Do you love just going freehand and seeing what comes out of the wood?
If you like bowl turning. Look for a chuck. It makesa lot of things easier. Hood Lusk
