Good friends of ours are expecting a boy any time now and I wanted to give them somthing from us that was bit different. I saw an article from American Association of Woodturners by Nick Cook on making an wooden baby rattle. I am just getting started turning and I thought it would be neat to try. The article is Heirlooms in the Making Turned Baby Rattles in American Woodturner Fall 2004. He talks about the choking hazards with the size of the rattle which I found helpful. The rattle turned out okay, I am still deciding if I want to add a few more layers of varnish or not. I have put a couple layers of salad bowl varnish and rubbed it with steel wool for a satin finish.

Great Rattle. What did you use inside? Peas?

The rattle is maple and the inside it black-eyed peas. You have to be careful when gluing the halves together that squeeze-out does not make the peas a solid mass inside…How exactly that is done is a mystery to me. After I took it out of the clamps and it no longer rattled, I was worried and then shock the heck out of the thing and must have dislodged them from the glue. It was almost firewood at that point.

What are you using as a finish? Nice rattle, by the way!

Nice rattle – almost looks like a Louisville Slugger baseball bat (if you stretch your imagination). Perfect gift for a baby boy.

The finish is General’s Salad Bowel Finish. I chose that because the food safe label, most children’s toys at that age end up in their mouths.

Great job!

Now when he gets a bit older you can refill it with lead shot and teach him to use it as a carver’s mallet. :-)
