I finally completed the Dynamo Men Lamp. It has taken me a bit longer than I expected as the pieces and placement of the various holes for the mechanism require some care in making them. John Hutchinson has presented several of his projects on this site and published the plans for this one in Woodcraft Magazine. His hints were very helpful in making this project. One can purchase many of the parts from him through his website but I decided to purchase the parts myself. I bought the 12 rpm motor on ebay, the bulb from Amazon and then the various electrical parts and bolts from the big box store.

Dale Maley also made this project and posted it here on LJ and he also has some hints on his web page that were useful.

The project is made primarily out of 3/8” Ash and even the gears were cut from Ash and finished with Danish Oil and then spray can lacquer. The men were made from some scraps of colored wood that I had to try to bring more interest to the project.

That is really cool.
Great job.

Here we go again …
- htl

The possibilities are really endless. I just “made” one with a 30-rpm motor that drives the small yellow gear. That gives a 15-rpm rotation to the large red gear.
The gears have 12, 16, and 24 teeth, so they’ll all be turning at different speeds.
I added a rum barrel just for kicks. :-)

In some ways, I like it better than the original.
