The squares are oak and walnut. The trim and the base are oak. The top is hinged to provide storage for the pieces underneath. I can’t take credit for the chess pieces…. ordered those from Lee Valley for a whopping $3.50!
I messed up a little and had to trim my outside sqaures a bit undersize, but I was fairly satisfied with the results for my first attempt at something this complicated.

Beautiful job, you should have kept quiet about your error. It looks like you’d need a very accurate instrument to detect it. I’m the same way though, it’s hard to hold back.

One of the important skills of a woodworker is learning how to recover from an error.
I find it interesting that when they used some kind of X-ray technology to look beneath the surface paint of many of the paintings of the masters, they found where the artist had obviously messed up and repainted a hand, or some other feature of the painting.

Hey, an artist has a right to change his mind during the creative process, right? LOL

Good one, Denis.
Reminds me about the guy who decided to build a dinningroom table, but discovered when he finished that the legs were uneven causing it to wobble. The repair would be easy, he thought, so he be shortened one of the legs, then another, then…
He ended up with a large coffee table.

When I got interested in woodworking a couple of years ago. my earliest projects were picture frames. I remember one in particular where I was having problems getting my miter joints perfect and kept recutting them till I got it right. What started out to be a frame for an 8×10 photo was just about right for a wallet-size when I was done.

No, it was $3.50 for the ENTIRE set of light and dark pieces!!! I couldn’t believe it considering how they usually rake us woodworkers over the coals for most specialty items.
