I was installing a new kitchen for my client, when the designer visited. They asked if I could open up this deep knee wall and build some cabinets which would be installed in the wall. They needed additional storage for China and crystal.

This is what I came up with. There are two cabinets which are held together by the face frame. Because the span is around 6’ long, I decided to use a 2×4 center support under a double 2×4 header. So the face frame spans the center support. The cabs are about a foot deep and two feet tall. When I cut out the drywall and the studs I added 2×4spanners for the cabinets to sit on.

I took measurements of the rough opening and went to work in my shop. The cabinets are built out of birch ply and solid poplar. The cabinets will be painted to match the existing trim.

Sorry for the sideways photos. I don’t know why they turn when I upload them.
