My girlfriend wanted a plant stand for her orchids and suggested we go out and buy one. Ack, ack I said, I’ll build one for you. This is what I came up with.

The stand is made out of solid cherry with the shelves having walnut plugs where the slats screwed onto their bases.

I started by sketching out the stand based on one in Lowes that I liked. I figured out the dimensions and how I wanted to build it. I didn’t want the stand to be boring to look at so I decided to add the walnut plugs to the shelves. It was also a good opportunity to buy a couple more tools and learn a new technique.

To make all the shelves even and square first built a jig to hold all the pieces in place and allow the shelves to get glued up. I made the jig and cut three 1/4” spacers to give even spacing of the shelf slats. Once the shelves were glued up I took them to the drill press to drill the counter-sunk holes and also used the drill press to create the plugs out of walnut. I then flush cut the plugs and sanded them flush.

I decided that finishing would be easier if I pre-finished the shelves so I did – four coats of Arm-R-Seal.

To assemble the stand, I used Dominos (although dowels would have worked just as well). I cut the Domino holes in the shelves and then laid out the legs. The center legs were the most difficult to layout as they had shelves from both sides and also need the mortises to alternate on their reference faces.

After glue-up I finished the legs and presented it to my girlfriend who promptly put it in the sunroom and put her orchids on it. I’m buying a selection of kitchen herbs for the lower shelves.

All in all a fun project. I’m looking forward now to seeing the cherry darken in the light. Thanks for looking.
