Project Information

It was about time I made a decent leg vise, and this is how I did it. the Chop is made from a slab of Cherry, the Wooden Screw was made of Hard Maple from Acer-Ferrous. it has bowties and Celtic carving throughout. and a Brass retention ring to top it all off. I have been wanting to do this for a long time and finally got around to it. there is not a thing I would change.

You can see the full build video here.

That vise is exquisite, the carving really sets it a notch above. The screw is from a Canadian firm I take it?

Oh my that is one beautiful vise. I just love the butterflies-never seen them in a vice before but it's a great touch. Should those be sufficient to hold it together under pressure on one edge? Say you lock a board in on the right and it racks a bit because you don't have a spacer on the left side-is that action going to work that crack apart? I hope not as I think it's gorgeous. Great work!

Thanks. the crack is only about 1/2" deep so it is not structural at all the whole chop is 2 1/2" thick. the bowties are there for looks though any presure placed on the chop woll be trying to close the crack rather then open it.

I really like everything about that vise. Those Celtic carvings are fantastic and the butterflies really add a special effect. Very nicely done.

You did a very nice job on this vise. It will be a great piece of equipment when mounted on your workbench and you have made it heavy duty and with a lot of nice details and craftsmanship. It should be very durable and practical and a great tool for your shop.
