About four years ago I built a small deck. Wanting to do it cheaply I used roughcut red oak instead of treated. I stained it real good and after a year it had so many warped boards I pulled it out to the side yard an just built a new deck the correct way.
I bought an old hand plane a few months back an tuned it up. I tore off one of the old boards just to see what I could make out of it. Well after I had a decent looking board I just had to do something with it so I built this little shelf. I went a head An done somewhat old school. I used just dowels and glue. I think I’ll hang it in my shop and hang my clamps on it

Used Red Oak to do it cheaply?????? Where in the world do you live that red oak is the cheaper way to go?

Hey guys. Red oak really probably ain’t normally as cheap as I got it. I knew the guy that owned the saw mill An talked to him about needing some cheap lumber to build a deck. I told him probably pine would work since at the time I knew it would eventually b replaced an just wanted to get from the driveway to house with out getting muddy. Anyway he said oak would b a lot better choice. He sold me 40 boards. All 1×6 by 8ft long for $2 a piece. At the time I hadn’t been married long An had just got my house so he probably knew I was broke An gave me the best deal he could I’ve been blessed to have a lot of older folks that I’ve looked up to, pay it forward and help me out when I was starting out I’ve tried to do the same now that things hav settled down as I’ve got older
