Alder Murphy Bed

Project by Chris Davis posted 777 days ago 664 views 0 times favorited 2 comments Add to Favorites Watch

This is a Murphy bed that was completed at the first of September. I’m Playing catch up on my postings. It is a mission style similar to the maple one I built last week. This was the first project that I got a chance to used Alder wood. Since building this one I had another opportunity to use it and more and more people are requesting quotes with Alder.

Alder is a little less dense of a wood than oak or maple but seems to be very stable. It gives that rustic look like pine with all the knots, if you specify Knotty Alder. The clear grain almost looks like Cherry. I believe I ready where people use it as a Cherry substitute. The price is very reasonable too, except for the plywood. It was a little more expensive than the usual oak or maple. I guess that is because soft woods with knots are harder to slice thin into veneers.

The face is what sets this one off. I have a more detailed explanation of how the face, with the doors are built. Check out the post Mission Wall With Hidden Bookcases

I did not put a finish on this one; the customers chose to do that on their own. I asked if they would send a completed picture. I’d love to see how it turns out.

Here are some other Mission styles that I built:
Oak Mission Style with Boockases
