This is a Cherry Toybox i just finished for my son’s 3rd birthday. The sides and front are panel and frame construction with mdf core ply for the recessed panels. Cabinet grade ply for the bottom and back. The legs are offset from the face 1/8” to create a shadow line, I biscuit jointed them to the fron and back panels to aid in the alignment for gluing. The side panels are held in place with glue and screws hidden by walnut plugs that were planed then sanded flush to the surface.

The design was inspired by a toybox I found searching pictures, my wife and I traveled to China last year to adopt our son. The curved legs and overhung top reminded me of similar design atributes we saw in the Forbidden City and the Summer palace. Pictures do not do them justice.

All parts were sanded to 220 then finished with 3 coats of Forby’s low gloss tung oil. I rubbed all parts with a brown paper bag after 24 hours to remove the dust nibs and lightly burnish the surface. I do not remember where i read that tip but have had great results using it on all finishes. If rubbing with a bag does not smooth the surface rub it with 320-400 grit sandpaer and recoat or apply a coating of paste wax.

Your son might not appreciate it yet, but in years to come he’ll be amazed. Nice work
