One day at work, I was asked to take a fake xmas tree to the dumpster, so I did, but the tree was a really nice one and I thought why put it in the dumpster, someone would probably like it. So I left it beside the dumpster and couple of hours later it was gone. A couple days later I was taking a box to the dumpster and there were these two wrought iron bench ends leaning up against the dumpster, I though ah ha! I will take those. They had ugly green paint on them, but I hit em with a wire brush and painted with hammered black paint.

I used some of my 50 cent a board foot hickory and made the width 44 inches, planed the wood to 5/8 thick to help with weight. I stained with pecan stain, kept it in the nut family. I used semi gloss Helmsman polyurethane. It sits well and is comfortable. The Hickory gives a little, has some spring to it which is nice.

There is a member in LJ who has as his by-line “honey-I found it in the garbage”, but you really did. Way to go.

I have the same bench! Been sitting in the yard for years waiting for me to swap out the oak for something new. I bought some Ipe a while back, just lacking the motivation. You did a great job filling in the details between the two dumpster diving finds!

Nice job on this. I really like the look of that hickory with the finish you put on it.

Great save of those bench ends! I’m happy to see that they didn’t end up in a landfill, and that they now have new life with your family!
