I turned these out of hard maple and purpleheart. I cut concentric circles out of 4/4 boards using my router table, then glued up and used my lathe to finish them. I used the cutoffs from the interior of the cup as tenons to grip them in my scroll chuck, and then used a jamb chuck to finish the foot. Some mineral streaks appeared in the maple particularly in the top layer of the bowl, as I turned them. Getting the end grain smooth, particularly on the concave interior of the bowl, was difficult, and involved judicious use of my 80-grit bowl gouge. I was surprised to find how nicely the purpleheart turned, it’s such a pain to work with usually but on a lathe it cut smoothly and fairly quickly. Threw some gorgeous loopy curls off of my bowl gouge-it got HOT though. Never been actually burned by shavings before. Finished with tung oil.

I like the contrast between the purpleheart and the maple. The bowl and cup are very eye-catching.
