This box, aptly named craterface, is the eighth box I have made since I began woodworking. When I discovered my Father’s old Foredom I quickly got the urge to play with power carving. This box is mostly a proof of concept and really my first attempt at something freehand so to speak. All of my projects up to this point have been very geometric and show symmetry. This box also taught me how to use my carbide bits and the techniques required to use each individual bit. It also taught me that having a thinner outer layer really cuts down on the time is takes to carve and it also gives more control on the final contrast.

Woods used: Maple and Walnut for the sides. Book matched Crotch Walnut for the top and Bottom.
Size: 6” X 6” X 2”

Hunter, this is a great concept and looks like you had fun with it. The walnut is beautiful. I even like the title of this well-crafted box. I wish we could see how it opens and had a picture of the inside of the box. You can edit that in any time you wish by clicking on the red “edit” symbol on the upper left, first page of your post. This is a nicely creative use of your new tool and the results are fun to see. Thanks for sharing this with us. Keep boxing and keep posting.

Very unique design! I like it! Would like to see it with the lid open as well!

I appreciate your feedback. I really like your box designs.
I could not figure out a handle that goes well with this box (for now) so i sanded a corner down on the bottom so that when you press the lid in it lifts up a little bit. The interior is plain since this was mostly just a test but i will probably velvet line it in the future.

Beautiful box, seems a shame to cover that walnut by lining the interior. Thanks for sharing.

While very nicely crafter and finished, I personally would not like a box or container like this. I have that phobia of things with many holes, what’s it called… I’m seriously getting the creeps just looking at all the perforations on the storage container right now!
