This is a little box that I made for my girlfriend’s birthday, since her favorite color is purple. It was actually the first real woodworking project that I completed on my own. The heart is laminated from four pieces of 4/4 purpleheart and cut out on the bandsaw, and the maple was hand re-sawed from 4/4 maple. It’s finished with many coats of spray-on aerosol can lacquer.

This was a great learning experience in design and bringing something to life. Among other things, I learned 1) finish the design before you start (which I didn’t do), but be flexible when needed (which I did do) and 2) a benchtop 10” bandsaw will not be happy to try to cut curves through 3.5” of purpleheart… whoops…

Hope y’all like it!

Well Mate, I like it a lot.
Purpleheart is one of my favourite timbers, and my Daughter also loves purple.
No matter what the problems you encounter along the way, solving them and learning from those problems is the only way to go.
I have never had a lesson in wood turning, everything I have learned is from mistakes.
Thanks for sharing.

Bob.

-- Bob, Western Australia, The Sun came up this morning, what a great start to the day. Now it's up to me to make it even better. I've cut this piece of wood 4 times and it's still too damn short.
