This was my first foray into steam bending wood (well, a combination of steam and hot water), so it’s imperfect, but what project isn’t? Biggest issue I had was finding a large enough container to fit the wood in to bend it. Fit the tops and bottoms using a method I hadn’t tried before, adjusting the table on my belt sander to a few degrees below square. Trace the shape from the sides, rough it out on the bandsaw, and then use the sander to come right up to the lines. The slight taper allows for easy insertion into the bent sides and a pretty darn good fit.

Made of cherry, with copper tacks and small holly pins for assembly. Finished with BLO.

Thanks, all!

Tugboater, if you’re looking for an easy start to them, Lee Valley sells kits that include the wood, tacks, and pins, so you’re ready to start bending wood and cutting out the tops and bottoms immediately. I got my tacks and pins from a friend who has used their kits. I’ve had trouble sourcing the small copper tacks from other vendors.

John Wilson sells everything required for shaker boxes (including copper tacks). I’ve been purchasing from him for years and never had a problem. His web site is
