I’m working on a new gunstock for a friend’s air-rifle. He didn’t like the existing stock so he purchased a chunk of walnut which I cut in two and had the pieces laminated to give me the correct thickness. When I cut out the rough stock, there were pieces left over and you guessed it I laminated those pieces and a boot was created.
I haven’t carved walnut for some time so I took up the challenge. I cut the boot blank with a broad toe and proceeded to remove the wood with my power carver and burr bits. I was surprised at how the wood was so easy to carve. The surprise came with the application of a French polish which I bought at Lee Valley. After about 4 coats of the product the grain came into it’s own.
Now I’m hankering for my favourite ice-cream sundae – Maple-walnut! I remember these at our home town Main Street Cafe. The sundae was a generous scoop of vanilla ice-cream topped with walnuts floating in an ocean of Canada’a famous maple syrup! Oh, my mouth is watering!

The boot is gorgeous and the polish brings out grain beautifully. I too love walnut and maple syrup and vanilla ice cream sundaes, but I cannot lie: I prefer to use peanuts!

Another beauty and the ice cream description makes my mouth water too.
