Building a Bird House with My Granddaughters

On their last day of Christmas break, my Granddaughters, Margaret (11) and Evelyn (6) came to my shop, and we built bird houses.

We started with a trip to a well-known woodworking store that begins with Rock* to get safety glasses, ear protection, and milk paint. Each girl got to choose one color. We marked out, sawed, drilled holes for nails, nailed up and painted one house. We have an other house started, but while nailing on the back, one side broke, so we glued and clamped it and will finish it when one or both girls can come back.

Evelyn and I had agreed on the design earlier, but the color scheme is all their own.

That’s awesome. I’m sure you’ll be hard pressed to build anything more satisfying than the memories you’ve built with you granddaughters!

Joe’s right—ya gotta start ‘em young!

It’s great that you got some shop time with the grandkids, and they have a couple of nice looking birdhouses to hang in the backyard!

Nice going, Grandpa. Precious moments like these are never a waste of time. No! You will never kill time by doing things like this. These moments are well spent for they are what life is made of.
