Made this as a gift for my sister in-law out of some hickory I’ve had lying around for a while. To her specifications exactly! I tried to convince her to get the stripes using wood instead of paint, but she was very specific how she wanted it. I was able to sneak in a waterfall look with splined miters (the splines are hidden as they stop short of the ends). The miters weren’t perfect, but I haven’t had time to get a miter sled put together and I’m too cheap to pick up a decent miter gauge.

It’s actually quite handy for holding drinks instead of an end table. Since their apartment is quite small, this saves them some room next to the couch.

Nice project, don’t worry, as long as she’s happy with it.

Love the waterfall, but I personally think the stripes take away from the natural grain of the wood. However, I understand your commitment to your client.

I like her idea and your leaning towards timber inlay. If the inlay was just very, very slightly wavy the contrast would still work but be more integrated with the hickory. Maybe one side of the inlay straight and one side slightly wavy. This should be explored more. Paper strips would be very easy to chop and change to see if something like this would even work. Well done.

Good idea. My wife liked the perch and thought she might like one as well, so I may have to see what I can come up with.

Some wavy inlay I did a couple of years after the fact.
