This is what I did on my Christmas Vacation for friends of mine. They wanted more room for DVD’s and books along the fireplace as well as the two piece crown around the living room. They couldn’t wait for me to finish before they loaded up the bookshelfs to make sure everything would fit. The last pic is what they had
The cabinets and bookcases are poplar and the raised panel is MDF as they are going to be painted once they finish updating the rest of the living room. I used the MDF because the panel was so big i didn’t want any warping down the road. What a mess it was using that stuff. I used a second applied style on the cabinets that is coped into the brick. What a chore that was. I used Cabinet Planner to design the cabinets.

You do nice work. Quite a bit more storage from the previous arrangement. The real question is, now that they’ve got is all full, how long will it be before it get painted?

Thanks Russel,
Hopefully in a couple of months it will get painted. They are going to put a hardwood floor down in the entire lower level and want me to come back and install new base then the paint.
Yea they did end up with a lot more space. I couldn’t believe how fast it filled up.
