A friend of mine asked is I would mat and frame his wife’s wedding vows so that he could give them to her as a Christmas present. He asked for a rustic type of frame.

I took some rough cut pine and used red oak dowels that I had rounded the ends of and left slightly raised to give the frame a bit more personality. I also engraved their wedding date along the bottom.

I used to actually create and use lap joints and the dowels to hold everything together, but I found that most folks don’t give much of a rip about joinery as long as it ‘looks pretty overall’. I have the dowels basically for show and use pocket holes and screws (and glue). It makes the project fly along…which was nice because, in this particular circumstance, my buddy waited until 5 days ago to ask me to do the project – and I still had my OWN Christmas stuff to finish up.

I always use plexiglass will anything I do because it’s just easier to handle, cut, and keep in one piece. My workspace is in my garage and I have two small kids…and I can be a klutz…so having sheets of glass around is just a pretty horrific idea all the way around. I cut the matting and finished the back with a dust cover and hanging wire (not pictured).

It was a pretty straightforward project, but my friend and his wife both liked it a bunch (they exchanged gifts last night). I hope it will hang on their wall for a long time.

Merry Christmas, everybody!
