My dad is coming to visit for Christmas and my wife and I were trying to figure out what to get him for a present. I actually had the idea of making something with him (he doesn’t do any woodworking), so I asked if there’s anything he would like to make. He sent me a link to an expandable desktop bookshelf on Amazon, which looked very doable. But my wife wisely reminded me that we probably won’t have time to do that, as we are expecting the arrival of twin babies any day now. So instead I made it for him.

I’ve never even seen a piece like this before, so making it was pretty interesting. The most time-consuming part was coming up with a design that would allows the slats to slide through the bookends instead of binding, but also not look too sloppy. It was just an exercise in precise measurements, which is a ‘needs more improvement’ area for me. I was hoping to just use wood glue, but ended up adding screws to strengthen it. My dad is going to use this for textbooks, so it’s going to be pretty functional piece (heavy books being put in it and taken out many times a day).

While there are a couple flaws in the piece, all in all I think it’s a success.

Very clever design, and it appears from here to be well executed. Good work! I know your dad will like it.

This is a nice and practical expandable bookcase. I’m sure that your Dad appreciated it.
