Made my wife a cryptex for Christmas

I saw Carl Jacobson’s video(s) on how to make a cryptex a while back. If you’ve read or seen the DaVinci Code by Dan Brown, you’ll know what it is. Basically, it’s a puzzle. Once you line up the correct letters/word/numbers, you can pull it apart and reveal the contents that are inside the smaller tube. I think I’m going to paint the one end so you can’t see the glue where the ring attaches to the larger tube.

My wife is into puzzles, games, etc, so I figured this would be a cool present. I’m putting some hockey tickets inside, since we enjoy going to games. She better guess the code in the next 2 weeks! Overall, it took me about 12 or 13 hours to complete, but I could probably do the next one in 3 or 4 now that I know what I’m doing.

The ends are walnut, the rings are maple, the outer tube is poplar, and the inner tube is mahogany. I put a couple coats of polyurethane on it and then lightly waxed it.

I like this. Very unique idea. Hope you don’t mind me copying this. Hope your wife doesn’t throw it at you.
