Just finished the last of a batch of spoons I’ve been making to give as Christmas presents! Carved a few from maple, some from Apple wood, and one from pear. The pear wood is really something – I can’t believe the color it has! Apple wood I’d say was my second favorite after the pear, then the maple. I even got. My wife to carve one – the maple spoon with the squarish bowl is hers.

I added a new tool to my kit about halfway through this batch, which is the small hatchet you can see me using in the photo. I had a slightly larger old hewing hatchet, but this little thing is so much more precise! It took a great edge, and feels like a laser compared to the larger hatchet I own! I really enjoy using it, and it has made my carving go much more quickly. I found it on ebay from a seller in Bulgaria that seems to make them as a hobby: http://www.ebay.com/itm/272272546874

Very fine job on these spoons. They will make great gifts.

Slick spoons! Apple wood is one of my favorites but I’d love to try pear one day. Thanks for the link I’m always looking for new hatchets to try. Do you use a template for your spoons? They look grate.
