I made this table after reading an article in Fine Woodworking on making tables with splayed tapered legs.
I did not follow the instructions all that closely since I didn’t have the same tools. At the time I did not have a table saw so I used a friend’s table saw to rip the boards for the top, cross-cut them and put the bevel on the underside. Everything else was cut with a band saw except the leg ends which is the only time I have cut a compound angle on my miter saw. You can cut both top and bottom with the same setup provided you register the fence/table with the outside edge of the leg, cutting tops from the left and bottoms from the right.
I cut the tenon shoulders on a band saw. Now I would use a table saw, or at least clean them up with a shoulder plane. The mortises were cut on router table. I made one mistake in registering the wrong edge to the fence. It was the last one and I knew I had made a mistake since it sounded different. I was so lucky that the mistake ended up inside the piece instead of on the outside of the leg – I didn’t have enough wood to make a spare. I’m showing the repaired joint for your amusement.
Figured maple and walnut legs.

Very nice table! Great material selection..I love the figured maple top and apron. Great job correcting the mistake…I was once told by an old furniture maker “It’s not always just your skill in building but also your ability to fix your mistakes, that makes you a good woodworker, ” Nice Job!

Nice work, Rak. Good combination of wood. The longer you do woodworking, the more you will realize that it’s saves like these that almost every woodworker learns to do.

The top is really nice. I love learning (the save) from other’s mistakes. Thanks for sharing that, I know I wont forget it :) It looks like a simple thing to do from this end , but I bet when it first happened (the mistake) thinking of how to recover took some times.

Great looking Quilted Maple. And good recovery on the Mortise. A very nice table.
I was cutting legs for 3 table and I had 14 legs. I cut 2 the wrong way and so I ended up with the right number, I’m thinking of making another and doing the legs wrong so i can salvage the legs.

They aren’t mistakes. They’re “alterations of the original plan”. Very nicely done and Kudos for showing us the real life situation. The perfect photos always make things look so easy.
