My first kid – a girl – was born in October. Once I got the news back in February, I knew I had to make a crib. I got to work in May, and finished it right before she was born. We’re gonna wait a few more months to put her in it, and I still have to finish the mattress support and buy the mattress.

I’m not very good at design, so I scoured the internets for some cribs/headboards that I liked, and kind of mashed a few designs together. I like the G&G aesthetic, so I went that route. Wood is cherry & maple; all of the maple came from some Vermont friends who cleared land to build a house. Instead of ebony for the plugs, I used ebonized walnut. I don’t think I’ll ever buy ebony again. This was such a perfect substitute, and I’ve always got walnut scraps laying around.

One element I toyed around with was the joinery. I knew I wanted it to be ‘knockdown,’ so I wound up using barrel nuts and hex bolts. To hide the bolt heads I made some larger plugs that are held in place with rare earth magnets. I was pretty pleased with myself until my girlfriend said, ‘won’t those be choking hazards?’. But they work so well! Oh well, the kid won’t know if the bolt heads are showing.

Finish is Tried & True oil & beeswax. I like this finish in theory, but man does it take a long time to cure (according to Bob Flexner, it never cures. He may be right).

Note I took the pictures with my phone, and messed around with the color settings.

Wow! Too cool G&G design touches! Congrats on your first bourn kid. I bet it will be in a family for generations.

awesome crib. Great way to introduce your daughter to woodworking and G&G at a VERY young age….. should be an heirloom that she can keep for her children.
